Deck
With singular focus, Pierce expands the cinematic imaginary through the mastery of visual layering techniques that blur the interface between live action and animation. Grounding DECK in domestic landscape, Pierce's animated single-frame photographs, and exquisitely constructed sound, lead the audience to fully engage with an inner life experience. DECK demonstrates that this rarefied quality of perception is available at every moment. Pierce's work guides us there, returns, and takes us back again. DECK, through its use of threshold abstraction and a tightly synchronized soundscape composition, is intended to emphasize the bodily experience of temporality. This 27 minute piece invites the viewer into a subdued yet reflective state of mind. The principle of harmonized rhythm underpins all of Pierce’s work. In the performed "live" animation shooting technique, in its editing and processing, in the sound composition and also in situating its reception, Pierce is engaged with the vagaries of the perception of "real time" and ideas about “consensus reality.” DECK is the theatrical version of a multiple format ongoing project. In all of his video and sound art, repetition and rhythm manifest the echoes and arcs of the irregular and subjective conjecture of time. It is less about itself and more about what might be induced in the viewer.
